Second Board Meeting of 2009-10 Produces Important Rotary Changes

The Rotary Board of Directors met from November 2 to 6 at One Rotary Center in Evanston, Illinois. Several significant issues regarding the direction of our global organization were addressed, including:

Our organization's strategic plan

Every three years our strategic plan will be reviewed and modified as necessary. It is under the framework of this strategic plan that the board will operate.

Since the last major review of its strategic plan, in 2007, RI has been conducting research internally and externally to evaluate Rotary's position in the market, the perception of Rotary around the world, and its members thoughts and ideas around the world.

Additionally, in 2009 the Strategic Planning Committee conducted an extensive and detailed analysis of Rotary's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT Analysis).

The resulting proposal is to revise our organization's mission and vision statement as well as to modify our strategic plan into a three-priority focus:

  • Support and strengthen clubs to achieve our mission
  • Increase our humanitarian impact with focused service opportunities
  • Enhance our public image and awareness

The board heard a lengthy presentation on the committee's report as well as a report from its own administration committee and adopted the proposed strategic plan modifications with some minor amendments.

Revisions to the Regional Rotary International Membership Coordinator program

The board agreed with the proposal of President Elect Ray Klinginsmith to restructure the RRIMC program with a Rotary Coordinator program that will mimic the successful RRFC program of The Rotary Foundation. The RC's will work in the same geographic regions as the RRFCs (41 around the world) and will help districts and clubs improve in their Rotary service, networking, and fellowship, as well as increase members.

The elements of this plan are currently under development. The selection of the RCs is underway with training for them planned in March of 2010. The RC program will be operational in July 2010.

Joint TRF Trustee and Board Committee Recommendation for Rotarian Action Group Modifications

The board approved a plan to request RI President John Kenny to appoint an ad hoc committee comprised of three board members and two TRF Trustees to meet with up to five leaders of Rotarian Action Groups to develop details of a new pilot program that will allow selected RAGS to operate more closely with RI, TRF, clubs and district structures.

So we should just relax for the rest of the year and let the others catch up- right? NO! Our Zone 26 is number one in the world in total giving, annual program fund giving, and number two in the world in contributions to the permanent fund and polio plus.

Our Zone 25 is number five in the world in total giving. Both of our zones are in the top five in total giving!

We need to keep that going. Now is the time for us to step it up- show the rest of the world that we believe in the Rotary Foundation and its ability to change lives. We are leaders of this organization. We have the ability to convince all our Rotarians to give something this year so all of us in zones 25 and 26 can say, "Everyone of our Rotarians gave something in 2009-10… we truly support the concept of e-r-e-y (Every Rotarian, Every Year)."
